Il me paraît que vos questions se rapportent à un seul point: que l’architecture moderne est grièvement souffrante. Je pense donc qu’il vaudrait mieux vous donner mon opinion en général, au lieu de répondre à vos questions une par une.
A mon avis, ces cinquante dernières années ont été l’histoire d’un échec tragique de l’architecture moderne.
Le Corbusier, qui a été un grand lutteur pour l’architecture moderne en 1920, a écrit en 1950, avec tant de regrets et aussi d’amertume, que le XXe siècle a beaucoup construit pour l’argent mais rien pour l’humanité!
Le XXe siècle a massacré Dieu, comme l’a dit Nietzsche, et l’on a cru qu’il avait rétabli l’humanité à sa place. Mais il me paraît que cette humanité n’a été qu’une chimère !
Depuis l’aube de l’histoire humaine, la technique inventée par l’homme n’a jamais cessé d’être le porte-bonheur et en même temps le porte-malheur de l’homme. La technique pour l’amélioration de la vie humaine a dû nécessairement distordre l’être humain, et cela a été toujours le rôle confié aux arts de récupérer la position originale de l’être humain. A l’époque médiévale de l’Europe, cette position originale de l’être humain était toujours bien claire et précise, grâce à l’échelle établie qui s’appelait Dieu. Aujourd’hui, on prétend que 1’«humanité» a bien remplacé le Dieu du Moyen Age. Mais, je me demande comment nous pouvons établir l’être humain sans aucune norme comme l’était Dieu autrefois! L’humanité, telle qu’elle est perçue par les architectes ou les urbanistes d’aujourd’hui, n’est qu’une chimère!
Voilà la véritable raison de tous les échecs et confusions de l’architecture et de l’urbanisme d’aujourd’hui, et probablement que c’est le résultat inévitable de la civilisation occidentale contemporaine.
Nous nous noyons aujourd’hui dans le déluge des connaissances scientifiques et des nouveautés techniques, et nous ne savons plus que faire devant les possibilités gigantesques, crées par nousmêmes, comme les Barbares n’ont su que faire devant les forces tyranniques de la nature!
Es scheint mir, dass sich Ihre Fragen auf einen einzigen Punkt beziehen : dass die moderne Architektur ernstlich leidet. Ich glaube deshalb, dass es besser ist, meine Meinung im allgemeinen auszudrücken, anstatt auf jede einzelne Ihrer Fragen einzugehen.
Meiner Meinung nach waren die letzten fünfzig Jahre die Geschichte eines tragischen Scheiterns der modernen Architektur.
Le Corbusier, der 1920 ein grosser optimistischer Verfechter der modernen Architektur war, hat 1950 mit grossem Bedauern, aber auch mit Bitterkeit geschrieben, dass das 20. Jahrhundert viel für Geld gebaut hat, aber nichts für die Menschheit !
Wie Nietzsche gesagt hat, hat das 20.
Jahrhundert Gott getötet und man hat geglaubt, dass es die Menschheit auf ihren Platz zurückgestellt habe. Mir scheint aber, dass diese Menschheit nur ein Alptraum gewesen ist!
Seit dem Beginn der Menschheitsgeschichte war die Technik, die vom Menschen erfunden wurde, zugleich Glückund Unglückbringer des Menschen. Die Technik als Verbesserung des menschlichen Lebens hat gezwungenermassen die Verzerrung des menschlichen Wesens herbeigeführt, und es ist immer der Kunst anvertraut worden, die Originalstellung des menschlichen Wesens wiederzufinden.

Since the dawn of human history, the technology invented by man has not ceased to be the good-luck charm and at the same time the omen of ill luck. The technique for the improvement of human life has necessarily distorted the human being, and to recuperate the original position of the human being has always been the role entrusted to the arts. During the medieval era in Europe, this singular position of the human being was always very clear and precise thanks to the established scale which was called God.
Today, one pretends tfiat ‘humanity’ has fully replaced the ‘God’ of the Middle Ages. However, I wonder how we can establish the human being without any norm like the ‘God’ of former times!
Humanity, such as it is perceived by the architects or the town planner of today, is only a fantasy.

Il est temps pour les architectes de partir pour une nouvelle croisade, en dénonçant la situation actuelle de l’architecture moderne, comme l’ont fait nos prédédesseurs au commencement du XXe siècle.
Rappelons-nous toujours que, pour ouvrir la porte des Temps modernes à la fin du Moyen Age, la Renaissance n’a pas été suffisante et qu’il a fallu la Réformation!

In der mittelalterlichen Zeit Europas war diese Originalstellung des menschlichen Wesens immer klar und genau festgelegt dank der aufgestellten Grösse, die sich Gott nannte. Heute behauptet man, dass die «Menschheit» den «Gott» des Mittelalters ersetzt hat. Aber ich frage mich, wie wir das menschliche Wesen ohne jegliche Norm, wie sie früher «Gott» war, festlegen können ! Die Menschheit, wie sie heute von den Architekten oder den Städtebauern wahrgenommen wird, ist lediglich ein Alptraum.
Das ist der wahre Grund für das Scheitern und die Verwirrungen der modernen Architektur und des Städtebaues, und wahrscheinlich ist es das unvermeidliche Ergebnis der heutigen abendländischen Zivilisation!
Wir befinden uns heute in einer Flut wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse und technischer Neuheiten, und wir wissen nicht mehr, was anfangen angesichts der von uns geschaffenen, riesigen Möglichkeiten, genau wie die Barbaren sich nicht vor der tyrannischen Kraft der Natur zu helfen wussten!
Es ist Zeit, dass die Architekten zu einer neuen Kreuzfahrt aufbrechen, indem sie der heutigen Situation der modernen Architektur kündigen, wie es unsere Vorgänger zu Beginn des Jahrhunderts getan haben.
Vergessen wir nicht, dass gegen Ende des Mittelalters die Renaissance nicht genügt hat, um das Tor zum modernen Zeitalter aufzustossen, und dass dazu noch die Reformation nötig war! K. M.
Here is the real reason for all the setbacks and confusion of present-day architecture and town planning, and probably it is the inevitable result of contemporary Western civilization.
We are drowning today in the flood of scientific knowledge and technical innovations, and we no longer know what to do when faced with the gigantic possibilities, created by ourselves, like the barbarians who did not know what to do when faced with the tyrannic forces of nature.
It is time for the architects to leave on a new crusade, denouncing the present situation of modern architecture, as our predecessors did at the beginning of the 20th century.
We should always remember that to open the door of the modern age at the end of the Middle Ages, the Renaissance was not sufficient and it was necessary to await the Reformation.
